FMS system vs TMS: what is the difference?
A TMS (transport management system) is built for the shipper or carrier side: planning loads, assigning trucks, optimising routes and tracking domestic movements. An FMS system is built for the freight forwarder: multi-leg international shipments, carrier rate sheets and surcharges, house and master bills, customs declarations, and profit per shipment across buy and sell rates.
That is why forwarders running a TMS end up rebuilding half a freight management system in spreadsheets — the object model simply does not match how a forwarding file works.
